OnePlus 50W SuperVOOC wireless charger

Best-in-industry 50W wireless charging trapped in a stand you can't lay flat. Genuinely great hardware, genuinely pointless next to a 120W cable.

the good

  • 50W wireless really is class-leading — fast, and it stays cool
  • Well built, and a tidy way to dock the phone on a desk

the bad

  • The stand shape won't let the phone lie flat on a table
  • Clamping it on upside-down makes it a clumsy wired charger with extra steps
  • Your 120W wired charger is faster and costs less

Let me be fair first: as a piece of hardware, this is excellent. 50W wireless charging is genuinely the best in the industry, it’s fast, and it doesn’t cook your phone doing it. On the spec sheet, it’s a win.

The problem is the shape. It’s a stand, so you can’t drop the phone flat onto it the way you would a wireless pad. To charge, you either prop the phone upright in the cradle or clip the coil to the back — and if I’m attaching a thing to the back of my phone to charge it, I’ve reinvented the wired charger, just slower and more awkward.

Which is the whole tension. If I’m going to physically connect something anyway, I’ll grab the 120W cable that charges faster and costs a fraction as much. The wireless magic is supposed to be “set it down and walk away,” and this design quietly takes that away. Brilliant charging, wrapped around a use case it undermines. Hence: mixed, not bad — but I don’t reach for it.
